ACU Academy Rider is World Champion PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

Former ACU Academy rider, Cal Crutchlow, picked up the World Supersport title at Parkalgar in Portugal on Sunday 25th October.

Riding for Yamaha, the Coventry based rider has dominated the series this year being the man to beat at every circuit. It has been a steep learning curve with lots of new circuits to master but Crutchlow showed what he is made of taking 10 pole positions, five wins, three seconds and two third places.

Crutchlow started the weekend with a 19 point lead over Eugene Laverty, his main title rival. He just needed a top 10 finish to take the Championship so he rode a very sensible race, finishing in fourth place.

Cal said: “Fourth is the worst finish I've had this year! Obviously I've had a couple of DNFs but when I've finished fourth has been the worst. I just wanted to bring it home. I didn't need to push Eugene.

“He's been riding really well all weekend and keeping the pressure on me. I didn't want to get into any battles, I followed Kenan Sofuoglu at the start but his pace was just too fast so I let him go. I let Gary McCoy past then settled in behind him and let him bring me home for the race so thanks to him.”

Crutchlow now has his sights firmly set on the World Superbike title as he makes the move up to the premier class.

The ACU would like to extend its congratulations to Cal on his well deserved Championship win and wish him all the best for his World Superbike career
