LAST night saw the official launch of the Ulster Grand Prix (UGP) 2009 at Hillsborough Castle.
The Mayor of Lisburn, senior race officials, sponsors and of course the media, were invited along to hear about what’s in store for this year’s event, which takes place between 9-15 August.
James Courtney, President of the Dundrod Motorcycle Club said; “This year we are starting afresh, and we have great hopes that this year’s UGP will reclaim its rightful place as the best event on the road racing calendar.
“Last year the weather got the better of us, but the fact remains that the UGP is the world’s fastest road race and attracts the big names on the racing circuit, such as John McGuinness, Ryan Farquhar, Cameron Donald and Ian Lougher.”
Race safety was an important theme at the launch, with Clerk of the Course Noel Johnston reassuring the audience that it remains paramount in race preparations.
“We are proud of what we’ve achieved to date with the course in terms of safety. While no road race is ever guaranteed to be 100% safe, please be assured that over the last seven years, we have spent £300,000 purely on assessing and updating the safety of the course. For instance, we’ve removed 300 metres of trees and hedges and replaced them with removable fencing.
My main objective for this year is to put on the biggest and safest race possible.”
Sports Minister Gregory Campbell said; “I am very pleased that the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure is once again supporting the Ulster Grand Prix. It’s a great event in our sporting calendar and deserves recognition as such. Dundrod on Saturday 15 August promises to be a great day out, not only for racing enthusiasts but for the whole family.”
Mr Courtney concluded; “Alongside our new media partner, the News Letter, we will endeavour to keep you all up to date with preparations for bike week. I’ll finish by saying that we have the best road racing circuit in Ireland, the race is on!”
