Garry Dickinson - March 2008 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Garry Dickinson

First of all a big thanks to Alan and Ben for asking me to do a regular columm, when I'll be telling you all more about myself and racing career.

I'll start with my plans for the coming season, as many of you will no I didn't race in 2007 at all due to complications with my leg. I badly broke my left femur in practice for the 250cc UGP in 2006, it was pinned in Ireland and then I was flown back to the UK. I was under the care of Mr Toby Branfoot who's treated many of the BSB stars over the years, and everything was looking good. I had started training back in the gym in readiness for 2007 but having lots of pain with my leg. Toby requested a CT scan which shocked us all as my femur hadn't healed and would require further surgery. Another major operation. Toby removed the original 18inch pin and took a bone graft from my pelvis. The operation was a success but then I received another set back, the original pin had been sent for analysis at microbiology which found a serious infection to be growing on the pin. A hickman line was fitted into my chest for strong antibiotic's twice a day to fight the infection. Thankfully these worked and the long road back to recovery began, I'm now back training and the leg has fully healed and after a recent visit to see Toby he is pleased at how thing are going. I can't thank Toby and his team enough for saving my leg, the same thanks also to all the Irish doctors who did a fantastic job after the accident, Dr John, Dr Evelyn and the marshalls at the UGP again I can never thank them enough.
This season I'll be riding for my good mate Robbie Silvesters VRS RACING TEAM, I've know Robbie for twenty odd years or more. I'll be joined by Keith Stewart and Craig Atkinson in the team and looking forward to working with them this season. I intend to race at all the scarborough races, NW200, UGP Aberdare Park and selected irish races and the 250cc TT at Billown. I will again be racing our own ex-GP 250 Jakub Smrz Honda 250 and Robbies ex Fabien Foret 600 Yamaha. It has been a long hard and painful road back to fitness and I really can't wait to get back racing again. I've now been racing since I was fourteen years old when I competed in schoolboy motocross, and with my birthday a week on tuesday I'll leave you all to work out my age!!
Well that's all for now stay tuned for more news soon, so till next time stay safe.
Garry
