Re: Going digital - advice needed 2 Years ago
Ok guys, since the TT my 300D has died and i have upgraded to a 30D which i know will give better results. Its just how much cash you have spare at any one time that limits your camera equipment. Next I will get a replacement for the 75-300 IS USM, is the 100-400 L IS USM worth the large price tag? Any other suggestions.
I know this is turning into a camera forum, but the equipment will be used for Road Racing Photography.
cheers

Hi Peter I've heard mixed reviews on the 100-400 Canon lens but I suppose most equipment Will get that!

V4 - I'm on the same side of the argument that you are I just Can't Afford the equipment !! - I'm getting what I can from what I have until I can take the step up (everybody has to start somewhere) As I said, I'd love a 1D Mk2/Mk2N and a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 APO HSM as I won't pay the huge prices for a Canon Prime.
As for Sharpness, (Although I wan't my shots sharp) I can't remember the last time I saw a copy of RoadRacing Ireland magazine or Irish Racer mag. with all shots pin sharp. There was a double spread recently in one that was horrendously unsharp.

The Donald shot was indeed taken with a polariser.

If what I'm using was adequate, I'm sure nobody would be paying what they do for pro equipment. But I'll have at least the lens this season and the camera next.

For now I'll keep manually focusing!

Savo - This thread turned into a technical (sort of) debate but to take decent pics remember you need a Digi SLR ... If you just want better than the compact shots a Fuji Finepix might suffice (don't need extra lenses) but make sure you get one with no shutter lag - Finepix S9000 is the latest model for around £400 I think.

Get a 70-200 f2.8 and either a 300 f2.8 or a 300 f4

oh and spend time to learn the basics of photography, good gear alone does not make a photographer

"all the gear, no idea!"

Hi again Derek,

My mate got the 70-200 2.8 IS and the quality is astounding!
He's looking at a 400 f4 DO but well he's loaded!

Interesting this as I would also like to buy a new lens.

Am I right in thinking that a Canon EF 28-300mm f3.5-5.6L IS USM is the best of the 300mm range for Canon?

Would it be a better tool for the job than those that you mentioned V4?

Or would I be better off with say Canon EF 100-400 F 4.5-5.6L IS USM

You lot know your kit. I've picked up a few good hints here. (Ta Ade). Keep all camera stuff in here before this thread is locked . Maybe a camera company should be advertisng on paddockgossip.com - the right product at the right place at the right price etc etc  Cheers again.

I find it hard to believe that you find those images in Irish Racer unsharp.

I don't think you'll get sharper pics in any other mag. The quality is awesome man.
