I don't think that charging a subscription is the way to go. Developing high quality content and upping the volume of visitors will build them a much bigger business in the longer run.

I guess you don't need that many subscribers to make a moderately good income but the whole thing could be on a bigger scale if they opened it to the masses.

With a bit of tweaking this site could be the leader of the pack. Updating the news on a daily basis and doing more rider features would leap it forward in a big way. I appreciate that it is the off season but i'd heard there was a race taking place out east this week!
