GREEN LIGHT FOR ARMOY
Road racing could be set for Armoy
THE possiblity of racing motorbikes streaming through Armoy recieved a big boost this week.
Members of Armoy Motorcycle Road Racing Club, the group behind the ambitious plans to turn the village into a road race circuit, were told that they have been granted affiliation to the Motorcycle Union of Ireland.
That means they are over the first substantial barrier to have faced their proposals.
The Armada club can now begin to make inroads into bringing high level racing to the north Antrim village - home of the legendary Joey Dunlop, Jim Dunlop, Mervyn Robinson and Frank Kennedy.
"We're delighted about this," said group member, Bill Kennedy, brother of Frank. "Getting the affiliation was a very important part of the process so we can now continue with our plans."
The next stage in the process, which aims to have a road race staged in Armoy in the summer of 2009, is an inspection by the MCUI's Road Safety Committee.
They will inspect the proposed circuit, which includes racing along Gracehill Road, Drones Road and Bregagh Road, sometime in the new year.
Then a Road Closure Act will provide the remaining big hurdle to clear. It will be granted providing the application meets a list of criteria including conditions relating to the safety of riders and spectators.
Currently, a maximum of ten road closing orders exist in the province, six for motorcycle events and four for car races.
Thereafter, consultations with local residents and landowners will be carried out with the aim of getting the thumbs up to begin racing around the time of 2009's North West 200.
Bill, a councillor in Ballymoney Borough Council, added: "There has been a lot of enthusiasm for this event to be staged, plenty of events to publicise it and build interest have been organised and it's going well.
"We've received enormous help from very experienced people, such as Mervyn Whyte from the Coleraine Club and the MCUI.
"At the minute I'm very confident it will get the go-ahead, there appears to be a lot of good will for a major road racing event in Armoy so that can only act in our favour."
The Armoy Armada Supporters Club stage monthly meetings in the village to keep their plans on track. Their next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 2 in Tilly Molloy's from 8pm.
They will be held on the first Wednesday of every month from then on.
You can become a member of the supporter's club for £20 or an affiliate member, without voting rights, for £5.
Meanwhile, plans by Armoy Community Association to develop an exciting handheld electronic tribute to the famous Armada continues to gather pace.
Due to be launched at the same time as the 2008 North West, the plans involve the use of state-of-the-art technology to bring the story of Joey, Jim, Frank and Mervyn to life.
This is being done by unearthing unseen footage, relating new and insightful stories and providing this information via the internet and as part of a tourist trail in the village.
The masses of information is currently being collated through a series of workshops, focus groups and seminars.
